What is Somatics?
Somatics is the practice of listening to and working with the body as a gateway to nervous system regulation, trauma healing, and long-term physical health. Rooted in neuroscience and psychology, somatic therapy recognizes that the body doesn’t just reflect your experiences—it stores them.
Chronic pain, tension, and dysfunction are not only structural—they’re neurological. They’re symptoms of misfiring pathways, overactive survival responses, and unreleased stress. This is where somatic work begins.
The body keeps the score.
– Dr. Bessel van der Kolk
Why the Usual Fixes Don’t Work
Let’s be clear: This is why “massage” doesn’t work. And chiropractic care? Physical therapy? Even medications? They help, temporarily. But they don’t rewire anything.
Every time you experience trauma, stress, or injury—whether physical or emotional—a neural pathway is disrupted. Sometimes severed entirely. These pathways are how the brain and body communicate. And when they’re damaged, the signal between “I’m safe” and “I’m in pain” gets jammed. That shoulder pain from 2006? The car wreck, the fall, the heartbreak, the betrayal? If it still lingers, it’s not because your body can’t heal. It’s because the communication system hasn’t been reconnected.
Most conventional therapies don’t even try. They treat the site of pain, not the system behind it. Somatic therapy is different. It starts with the nervous system. It tracks pain to its source—not just in the tissue, but in the patterning. It reconnects the broken circuits. And from there, the healing begins.
Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.
– Carl Jung
The Clinical Core
Somatic therapy is grounded in neuroscience, polyvagal theory, and trauma-informed care. It targets the autonomic nervous system—specifically the sympathetic (fight/flight) and parasympathetic (rest/digest) branches. After injury or trauma, the nervous system can lock into a hypervigilant state. You stay “on alert” even when the threat is long gone. This leads to chronic bracing, inflammation, and misfired signals that your body interprets as pain, stiffness, fatigue, or numbness. You don’t just have tight shoulders. You have a nervous system that’s stuck. You’re not lazy. You’re in a freeze state.
Pain is not always damage—it’s miscommunication. Somatics repairs the signal. It helps the nervous system remember safety.
Why It Actually Works
Pain is an output, not an input. The brain sends pain based on perceived threat—not just physical injury. Somatic therapy uses direct physical input—touch, breath, stretch, and stimulation—to give the brain new evidence that the body is no longer under threat. Over time, this retrains the nervous system to de-escalate. It stops sending pain. It starts sending clarity.
This is how we reconnect neural pathways. This is how chronic pain finally stops being chronic. This is how people come home to themselves.
And yes—psychoactive supplements can amplify this process. Psilocybin, ketamine, MDMA-assisted therapy—all of them open new windows in the mind. But without somatic integration, those windows slam shut. The work still has to be done in the body.
Freedom is what you do with what’s been done to you.
– Jean-Paul Sartre
The Hillheim Approach
At Hillheim, somatics is not an add-on. It’s the foundation. Whether you’re recovering from an injury, living with chronic pain, dealing with anxiety or trauma, or simply feeling disconnected—everything here is built on the nervous system. This is not “relaxation therapy.” But that doesn’t mean it has to hurt. In fact, most people find more peace, more clarity, and more relaxation here than any “massage” they’ve ever received—because their body is finally being treated as a whole. Not just manipulated. Not just numbed. Rewired.
Each session blends:
- Neuromuscular therapy
- Deep tissue and myofascial release
- Breath-led manual work
- Facilitated stretching
- Nervous system tracking
- (Occasionally) cupping and scraping, depending on condition
- Trauma-informed, intuitive fascia work
Trauma is not what happens to you. Trauma is what happens inside you as a result of what happens to you.
– Dr. Gabor Maté
Existential Somatics
Somatics isn’t just science. It’s sovereignty. You didn’t choose your pain, but you are responsible for it now. That’s not shame—that’s power. Because it means you can change it. Somatic work asks you to become a witness to your body’s truth.
To feel what you’ve been avoiding. To stop outsourcing your healing. To stop dissociating from your own power. This work is hard. But it’s honest. It’s radical. And it lasts. Somatics doesn’t offer fantasy. It offers this: You are not broken. You are brilliant. Your body has been trying to save your life all along. Let it.
